5 Signs Your Brand Positioning Isn't Working
Do you ever feel as if your marketing efforts are falling flat, or you’re attracting the wrong kind of enquiries?
Your brand positioning could be the root cause. Strong positioning helps your business to stand out, to attract the right clients and to clearly communicate your value. Here are five common signs your brand positioning might need a rethink:
1. You don't have a clear USP or don't stand out
If your website, pitch, or marketing copy could easily belong to one of your competitors, there’s little reason for prospects to actively select your business. Really clear differentiation is key!
2. People don’t understand what you do
If you can't encapsulate what you do and how you add value in a few words, it is likely that your messaging needs to be simplified or refocused.
3. You’re attracting the wrong type of clients
If you are aiming at one sort of client but you get enquiries from a different audience it could be a sign that your brand is not clearly positioned. What issues do you solve? What value do you add?
4. You're unsure what to say
If marketing always feels like guesswork, it's often because your core message isn’t clearly defined. Ideally you can reel off who your target market is, where to find them and how you help them - as a minimum!
For example, this is my business positioning statement:
I help businesses that lack time, leads and clear direction to market themselves effectively and achieve growth.
This is my target audience:
Business owners, startups and SMEs
5. Your growth has plateaued
If you don't have a steady flow of leads or word-of-mouth enquiries, it could be because your brand positioning is holding you back.
The solution?
Go back to basics.
Revisit who you’re trying to reach, the problems you solve for them and what makes your approach unique.
When your positioning is right, marketing becomes more effective and far less stressful!

Clarity
Can a first-time website visitor understand what your business offers in under 5 seconds? If not, your homepage may need a clearer message or headline.
Mobile-friendliness
Check your site on your phone. Is it easy to read and navigate? Over 50% of traffic comes from mobile, so this matters. If you can't read it on a phone, you will loose traffic.
Speed
A slow-loading site loses visitors quickly. People generally have a short attention span, thanks to social media! Use free tools like the ones below to get a basic performance score on your site.

Call to Action
Is it obvious what you want visitors to do next? Do you want them to book a call, download something or get in touch with you? Every page should guide users clearly around the site making things easy for them to find, especially your email address.
Consistency
Do your visuals, tone and branding feel aligned with how you want to be seen? if you put out disjointed designs it can undermine the trust in your brand due to the lack of consistency. If your site isn’t passing this quick test, it might be time for a tune-up. The good news? Small changes often make a big difference!
